The street hockey programme commenced in officially in September 2008 and involved 12 schools per year within the Nottingham City Schools Sports Partnership

The project has been funded by Capital One and will be delivered by National Ice Centre Sports Development Team in partnership with the Nottingham City School Sport Partnership.


The funding for the programme has enabled 12 schools to receive:-

  • Street hockey equipment for the school to keep – including 30 street sticks, 30 balls, 2 street hockey nets and a stick bag
  • Each child taking part receives an official Street Hockey In The Community branded tshirt
  • 6 Weeks of specialist street hockey training from the National Ice Centre Coaching Team
  • The opportunity for the group to be transported to the National Ice Centre and take part in a public skating session

After the skating session 4 children from the group were talent identified for their skating ability. Each child is rewarded with a 6 week learn to skate course.

Term 1 – Warren Primary, Old Basford Primary, Bonington Junior and Sneinton Primary

Term 2 – Greenwood Junior, St Mary’s Catholic School, St Augustines Primary, Snapewood Primary

Term 3 – Haydn Primary, Walter Halls Primary, Springfield Primary, Bluebell Hill Primary

At the end of each term the four schools were invited to Southglade Leisure Centre to compete in a street hockey tournament. The games take place within a purpose built 15m x 11m inflatable surround.

Matt Bradbury, Sports Development Officer, National Ice Centre, said: “The programme has been developed to teach youngsters the basic and fundamental skills of hockey and provides a unique opportunity for children who wouldn’t normally get involved in sporting activities.

“The aim of the scheme is to open up opportunities that create positive attitudes and increase self esteem amongst youngsters. We have run similar schemes before and always had success and positive feedback”.

Nick Robb, The Ellis Guilford School Sport Partnership, Partnership Development Manager, said: “The Ellis Guilford School Sport Partnership has been working with the NIC for the last six years developing a number of projects to provide young people in the City access to high quality coaching in ice sports and other related activities, both at the NIC and in an outreach capacity at schools and other community venues.

“Through these projects hundreds of children have had the opportunity to try their hand at different and exciting sports with many continuing their involvement through the NIC coaching programmes.

“The Street Hockey programme is the latest development that is going to provide schools with an innovative and exciting new sport that I know will inspire even more young people to continue their involvement in sport”.
