Basketball legends the Harlem Globetrotters bounced into a Nottingham school this week to show off their slam dunking skills to young fans.
Kids at our School of Ice, Blue Bell Hill in St Anns put in some extra training on the court before two of the teams’ greatest players arrived to showcase their talents.
Harlem team members Flip Atkins and Blenda Rodriguez showed the 250 pupils some of their trademark Globetrotter tricks and spins and gave them a ‘C.H.E.E.R For Character’ presentation which amied to inspire the youngsters to work hard in school and keep a healthy mind and body.
We couldn’t resist setting them a challenge of spinning a basketball on an ice hockey stick which we grabbed a picture of (see above)- and then for the real challenge: spinning a basketball on an ice hockey boot lace!! Check the video out here…
The visit even made TV!! Check out the features on ITV Central News and BBC news.
The visit is ahead of the full Harlem Globetrotters squad appearing at Capital FM Arena Nottingham at 7.30pm on Wednesday 21 March as part of their ‘World of Fun’ tour.

To celebrate the launch of the new Muppets Movie on Friday 10 February 2012, we were joined at the National Ice Centre by Animal who took time away from his drum kit to try his hand at ice skating!
Check out the full video here:
The National Ice Centre Learning Zone and Cineworld Nottingham teamed up once again as partners to offer opportunities for children and schools to take part in something a little different linking the movies to the ice.
Blue Bell Hill School pupils have been working hard making their very own Muppets which will go on display in the main foyer in time for the launch of the film. This was a way of introducing art, craft and design into their lessons in a unique and engaging way.
Whilst the ice skating may not have turned out quite how Animal may have liked – why not try and learn a new sport in 2012 and try our ice skating lessons with your family. For further information visit our website!
National Ice Centre short track skaters, Jack Whelbourne and Jon Eley, won silver and bronze at the ISU European Short Track Speed Skating Championships this weekend in the Czech Republic.
Competing against Europe’s best over 500m, the two had progressed through to the final after some impressive skating and were poised to take podium positions with only Russia’s Vladamir Grigorev and Germany’s Robert Seifert in their way.
While Grigorev was able to take an early lead and command the race, the battle for silver was hard fought. Multiple crashes around the rink saw the two remaining medals change hands many times but with one lap to go a final crash involving Eley and Seifert gave Whelbourne the opportunity he needed to skate into silver as Eely recovered to take bronze.
This is the first individual international medal for Whelbourne, 21, this season, who claimed silver in the 500m at last year’s European Championships as well as bronze in the 1000m. World number two Eley, 27, adds the bronze to World Cup gold and silver in the 500m he secured earlier in the season.
Despite double medal success in the Men’s 500m, the team was faced with misfortune throughout the weekend.
Hotly tipped Elise Christie was unable to add to her two World Cup medals after a crash during the final of the Ladies 1500m forced her to withdraw from the rest of the competition. Eley also met with injury woes after the 500m final, leaving him unable to see out the rest of the Championships.
The Men’s relay squad, competing without Eley, skated exceptionally well throughout the heats and the semi-finals to reach the final of the Men’s 5000m Relay. Paul Stanley, Ian Upcott, Jack Whelbourne and Richard Shoebridge finished in second position behind the Netherlands only to be denied a medal following the referee’s decision to award a penalty to the quartet.
Whelbourne faced frustration following a penalty in the Men’s 1000m final, the event he took bronze in last year, ending his medal opportunity.
National Performance Director Stuart Horsepool, said: “We’ve come away with two medals which is great, but we were coming here with hopes of much more. Jack skated incredibly well in the 500m and for Jon to get back up and take bronze was great as well, but to say that we’ve been unlucky these past few days is an understatement!
“This weekend was a reminder of how hard it is to win medals at international level. When skaters are moving around the ice in a bunch at speeds in excess of 45kmph anything can happen. This weekend we were unlucky.”
“To lose Elise, one of the top skaters in the world this year, was a disappointment, but to then lose Jon as well definitely lost us a couple of medals.
“I’m proud of the way the team came together to skate the way they did. The fact that the relay were able to finish second in the final, despite the penalty, with a new formation speaks volumes for their level of skill.
“We’ve got the World Cup in Moscow coming up next weekend so we’re now going to re-group and prepare for that. Jon and Elise will go back to Britain to assess their injuries, but hopefully they will be able to recover quickly.”
The team will compete at the ISU World Cup in Moscow, Russia from 3-5 February as they build toward the World Championships taking place in Shanghai in March, and the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
The athletes selected to represent Great Britain are:
Jon Eley
Richard Shoebridge
Paul Stanley
Ian Upcott
Jack Whelbourne
Elise Christie
Charlotte Gilmartin
