Nottingham Nets Goalie Development Advice

Seven delegates from the National Ice Centre and Nottingham Ice Hockey Club attended the Jim Corsi Goalie Development Seminar that took place in Cardiff on 5 & 6 July 2019.

NHL goalie coach, Jim Corsi, delivered on and off-ice presentations specifically relating to the coaching of netminders.

Sports Development Officer, Ryan Rathbone, attended the course and commented “This was an excellent two days. Jim’s thoughts will be invaluable in helping us to deliver better coaching provision for all our goalies. The EIHA Education Programme has also launched a goalie-specific coaching unit, so things are now moving forward quickly in this area. We want to ensure that both the NIC and NIHC are fully involved as the approach changes.”

The NIC and NIHC are now working on a specific goalie development strategy, hoping to place the venue on the map as a hub for goalie development. The plan looks at improving both the quality of coaching netminders receive as well as the amount of specific training opportunities that are available. Through partnership work the NIC and NIHC are able to ensure the programmes are both affordable, successful and specifically designed to maximise the benefits.

Club Treasurer, Adrian Wright, added “The whole Club has worked really hard to get our finances shipshape and in a position where we can properly invest in ice hockey development. The message from our coaches was that improving the teaching of netminding should be a high priority. All the feedback about the seminar has been incredibly positive and we look forward to seeing the benefits of this investment over the coming years”.

Rathbone concluded, “The Club has helped to develop some great goalies in the past and continues to do so in the present. The knowledge and advice we gained at the seminar will keep that production line going and make it even stronger.”
