Chinese New Year at the NIC

While many are marking the Chinese New Year with grand celebrations, we’re seeing in the Year of the Pig with the talented Chinese short track speed skating team – who are currently training at the National Ice Centre.

The team are residing in the city for a packed schedule of on-ice and off-ice training, under head coach Nicky Gooch, the former coach of Triple World Champion speed skater Elise Christie.

The short track skaters have made the journey from Beijing to Nottingham with a goal of being selected for the next Winter Olympics in 2022, on their home turf.

The team make up the 4th tier of the official China short track speed skating team, with 16 athletes ranging from 13 to 21 years of age.

If you’re lucky enough to spot them on our ice rink hitting speeds of up to 35kmph, they will be in Nottingham until March, with hopes of extending their stay further.

Nottingham is a great city to learn the fast and adrenaline-fuelled sport that is speed skating. We have a popular Learn to Speed Skate course for beginners, as well as taster sessions every weekend. We are also home to the Nottinghamshire Ice Racing Club, where many go on to become future athletes for the GB Short Track performance team.
