FIGURE SKATING & ICE DANCE

Figure skating involves individuals and mixed couples competing to perform the most spectacular and accurately executed elements, while skating to music.

Ice dancing is similar to ballroom dancing with a greater emphasis being placed on the way the skaters move to the music – Olympic and World Champions Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were ice dancers.

Our figure and ice dance programmes are backed by the National Ice Skating Association (NISA) – the UK Governing Body of British Ice Skating. All Figure and Ice Dance classes can be booked online, and the Figure and Ice Dance timetables can be found on our booking system.

LEARN TO FIGURE SKATE OR ICE DANCE

Progression through the skating grades is needed in order to move into figure skating or ice dance. After completing all eight skating grades, you will need to choose between figure skating and ice dance and pass the three levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) on the Skate UK Star Programme.

Following completion of the Skate UK Star programme, you are required to complete the Star Plus Programme (also made up of three levels) and upon completion of this, you are eligible to enter the NISA standard test system and progress towards skating qualifications and competitions.

FIGURE SKATING & ICE DANCE CLINICS

The National Ice Centre hosts clinics for both adult and junior skaters. The clinics combine on and off ice sessions and provide skaters with a well-rounded, technical knowledge base which is key to becoming a skilled skater.

Check out our forthcoming events for details of our latest figure skating and ice dance clinics. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to find out about upcoming clinics as they’re announced.

Advanced booking is required for all clinics and online booking is now available.

FIGURE SKATING & ICE DANCE CLASSES

Our figure skating and ice dance classes provide an opportunity to improve your overall ability in either discipline. Both classes last one hour and are aimed at skaters under the age of 18 who are wanting to strengthen their basic skating skills.

Our figure skating class covers edge work, spins, jumps, flexibility and artistry. To participate skaters must have a basic grasp of ice dance elements and are required to have passed the bronze free level of the Skate UK Star Programme.

Skaters who show real flair during classes may be talent spotted by one of our coaches and invited to join the NIC Figure Skating Academy – this could be your pathway to becoming an elite athlete!
